Bernhard Shaws 1913 veröffentlichtes Stück ist heute vor allem als Film und Musical My Fair Lady bekannt – wobei zwischen diesem und dem Original Pygmalion große Unterschiede bestehen. Mit pointiertem Witz werden die zeitlosen Probleme von Klassengesellschaft, Sprache und natürlich Geld kommentiert. Der Titel kommt aus der griechischen Mythologie: der Bildhauer Pygmalion verliebte sich in sein Kunstwerk und flehte die Götter an, sie zum Leben zu erwecken.

For a bet, a professor of linguistics takes a girl from the gutter and transforms her into a duchess. What could go wrong? Bernard Shaw’s play of 1913 is probably better known these days as the musical and film My Fair Lady. Pygmalion is the original and differs considerably from the musical. Although frequently funny, there is an underlying seriousness and it makes pointed comments about class, language and of course money – issues that are as relevant today as they were then. The title is taken from the Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with his own creation and begged the gods to give her life.
